When did your love for the sport begin? My love for cycling began when my son, Matt Willinger became interested in racing. My first experience was at the Early Bird Crit in Fremont . From that point on I was hooked. Both my wife Geri and I have been attending races for the past 5 years. My company IAS has sponsored the RH Villa team since 2002 and I hope that we have played a small part in building the team to its current level.

On a personal note, I became a cyclist myself and ride every chance I get. I have lost 28 pounds is 4 years and now can ride everywhere in the bay area; including the Oakland hills and Mt. Diablo . In fact, I just completed my first race this year, the BBC Team Time Trial.

It is indeed my pleasure to be associated with the team. It is a unique and diverse group of riders and sponsors.

What do you see or wish for the future of cycling, locally and generally? Cycling has had a tremendous growth in the past few years, particularly here in California . Part of this may be due to the aging baby boomers who were active athletes in their youth. Cycling is a unique combination of physical activity and “very cool” technology. It also appeals to our increased awareness of the environment and our need to reduce our reliance on petroleum.

I think that this growth will continue and I want to be part of it. I love this team and all the riders. I will continue to due my part to make sure these guys have the tools they need to meet and exceed their expectations.

Do you have any memorable race support moments? Every race is memorable, but I do love the stage races. I love the suspense that builds with each stage; calculating the time for each rider and “marking” the riders that are in contention. I enjoy the team comradery and the discussions associated with every aspect of the race. We have particularly enjoyed the Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend , OR . One of our most memorable stages was when Matt came in first place on the Mt. Bachelor Road Race.
